Police in the English city of Birmingham have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with incidents in which live mice were thrown into McDonald’s restaurants in an apparent pro-Palestinian protest. A suspected accomplice (30) is also being sought, West Midlands Police said on Wednesday evening.

The two men are being investigated for disturbing public order. “Our position is clear: this is disgusting and will not be tolerated. We will arrest and prosecute anyone who commits such acts,” the police statement said. The incidents are said to have occurred on Monday and Tuesday.

McDonald’s: No support for conflicting parties

Videos circulating online showed men carrying Palestinian flags dumping crates of mice or rats into McDonald’s restaurants. Some animals appeared to be painted in the colors of the Palestinian flag. The activists would like to take revenge for the fact that the chain’s restaurants in Israel had distributed free meals to soldiers.

A McDonald’s spokesperson was shocked by the incidents, according to the British news agency PA. He emphasized that in Israel these were independent decisions made by the individual permit holders. “McDonald’s Corporation does not finance or support any government involved in the conflict,” the spokesperson said. Local business partners who operate restaurants under license would independently devise promotions, without McDonald’s permission. The fast food chain said its restaurants had been fully cleaned after the incidents and exterminators had been called in. (SDA)
