Escalation in the metro station: anti-fascists and right-wing extremists engage in an aggressive confrontation.

On Wednesday evening there were serious clashes between right-wing extremists, anti-fascists and police in central Athens. The groups attacked each other with stones, firebombs and steel bars, especially at the metro station in the popular tourist district of Monastiraki, Minister of Civil Protection Giannis Oikonomou (50) announced on Thursday. 60 people were arrested.

The reason for the riots was the tenth anniversary of the murder of two Greek right-wing extremists; the case was never fully resolved. The authorities banned a demonstration of like-minded people on the occasion of the anniversary. Nevertheless, some 1,500 people gathered in various locations, as the Ministry of Civil Protection announced. There were even 21 neo-fascists from Italy; they were taken into custody and sent back to Italy, it was said. (SDA)
