A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Timor on Thursday, according to the US. According to the US Earthquake Observatory (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 36.1 kilometers in the west of the island near the town of Kupang. Therefore, the residents ran from their houses into the open air. According to the Indonesian Geophysics Agency, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale.
According to an AFP journalist, the earthquake was strongly felt in Kupang, but there were no casualties. Accordingly, buildings were damaged and some residential buildings were evacuated. The island in the southeast of the Indonesian archipelago is divided into two: the area that belongs to Indonesia in the west and the independent island state of East Timor.
Indonesia is hit by earthquakes more often. The country lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Earth regularly trembles due to the friction of tectonic plates. In November last year, 602 people were killed in a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in West Java province. (sda/afp)
