Former President Donald Trump is angry because his sons are being questioned in court.

Former US President Donald Trump (77) has again attacked the judge responsible for the fraud trial against him in New York. “Leave my children alone, Engoron,” Trump wrote to Judge Arthur Engoron (74) on his online platform Truth Social on Wednesday. The 77-year-old Republican was referring to the interrogation of his eldest sons Donald Trump Junior (45) and Eric Trump (39) in court, scheduled for this week.

Trump described Engoron in Truth Social as a politically motivated judge “who does the dirty work for the Democratic Party.” Engoron is “crazy, completely crazy and dangerous” – and a “disgrace” to his profession.

How much should the Trumps pay?

The civil lawsuit accuses the ex-president and his two eldest sons of inflating the assets of the family real estate empire over the years to get better terms on loans and insurance. Don Jr., 45, and Eric, 39, are executive vice presidents of the Trump Organization, which owns numerous properties, hotels and golf courses. They were to be interviewed on Wednesday and Thursday.

Trump’s eldest daughter Ivanka (42) could also be questioned in the trial. However, she is no longer a suspect in the proceedings.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James (65) sued Trump and his sons in September 2022. She achieved a major legal success before the trial began in early October: Judge Engoron ruled that Trump had overestimated his real estate assets and had therefore committed “fraud.”

The civil trial is therefore mainly concerned with the question of how high the penalty will be. Attorney General James has demanded, among other things, a fine of $250 million. She also wants Trump and his two eldest sons to be banned from running businesses in New York. The ex-president is not threatened with a prison sentence in this case.

Four more criminal cases against Trump

Trump, who wants to run again in the presidential elections in a year, has rejected all allegations and described them as politically motivated. In this context, the ex-president has repeatedly attacked Attorney General James and Judge Engoron. Engoron twice fined Trump for assaulting a court employee.

In addition to the civil case, the ex-president has been charged in four criminal cases. Two charges relate to the ex-president’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election to remain in power. (AFP/bab)
