Destroyed houses, deep craters – in the Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, Palestinians search among the rubble for survivors of an Israeli attack. Why did the Israeli army target a refugee camp in the first place? Look offers answers.

What happened?

Scores of people were killed in a major Israeli military attack on Jabalia on Tuesday. The military said around 50 terrorists were killed in Tuesday’s attack, including Ibrahim Biari, the mastermind behind Hamas’ Islamist massacre in Israel on October 7. Biari is said to have overseen all Hamas operations in the northern Gaza Strip.

Information about the number of victims varies. Hamas speaks of 400 dead and wounded. According to Hamas’s armed wing, seven civilian hostages were killed. The Kassam Brigades said three of them had foreign passports. The information cannot be verified.

Another attack took place on the Jabalia refugee camp on Wednesday, killing and wounding “dozens” of people, according to Hamas. Israeli warplanes bombed the refugee camp, the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health said. Rescuers said “entire families” had been killed. Images from the AFP news agency showed extensive destruction caused by the renewed attack.

How does Israel justify the deadly attacks?

The Israeli army spoke of a “large-scale attack” on a “Hamas military stronghold” in the west of the city. Terrorists, among other things, were trained there. Soldiers identified Hamas forces in a high-rise building and launched airstrikes against them.

These attacks subsequently caused an underground tunnel system to collapse and several adjacent buildings to collapse. Hamas builds such tunnels to hide, smuggle weapons and carry out attacks.

The Israeli military has released a satellite image of the ‘Hamas military compound’, showing that ‘terrorist activities were being practiced and carried out’. The recording showed alleged Hamas facilities, such as tunnel entrances and rocket launch sites. Adjacent to the site are mosques and a clinic.

What do we know about the refugee camp?

After the Palestine War in 1948, the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) built a 1.4 square kilometer refugee camp for approximately 35,000 people. The camp has now grown into a city where around 116,000 refugees are registered. It is the largest camp in the Gaza Strip and one of the most densely populated places on earth.

Jabalia is a known stronghold of the Islamist Hamas. It is the place where the first Intifada against Israel began in 1987. The conflict lasted until 1993 and resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths on the Palestinian side and 200 deaths on the Israeli side.

Following the October 7 attack on Israel, Hamas terrorists abducted more than 200 hostages to the Gaza Strip. It is believed that some of them are in Jabalia and, like Palestinian civilians, are being used as shields.

How does the world react?

UN Secretary General António Guterres (74) was “deeply concerned” about the worsening of the conflict. According to the Pentagon, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin (70) emphasized in a telephone conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Joav Gallant (64) “the need to make the safety of civilians a top priority during military operations.”

Qatar spoke of a “new bloodbath against the defenseless Palestinian people”. It undermines mediation and de-escalation efforts. Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia also strongly condemned the airstrike.

Bolivia broke off diplomatic relations with Israel over the attacks on the Gaza Strip. At the same time, the South American countries of Chile and Colombia recalled their ambassadors for consultations. “Chile strongly condemns the military operation in the Gaza Strip and notes with deep concern that this operation, which constitutes collective punishment of the Palestinian civilian population, does not comply with the fundamental norms of international law,” a statement from the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
