Police in Australia are searching for the body of a surfer believed to have been killed in a shark attack. “The man’s body has not yet been found and the search resumed this morning,” police in South Australia state said on Wednesday. The 55-year-old surfer disappeared on Tuesday morning near the popular surfing area Granites Beach.
Ian Brophy, who witnessed the incident, told local newspaper The Advertiser that he saw a shark “attack and bite” and drag the man underwater, with “blood everywhere”.
“I saw him in the wave and the shark had his body in his mouth – it was brutal,” he explained. After a few minutes, only the victim’s surfboard was visible. The shark probably swallowed him whole, he added. Another witness told ABC Television that the shark was “as long as a limousine.”
The coast of South Australia is known as the home of great white sharks. In May, a teacher was mauled to death by a shark about 75 miles from the site of Tuesday’s attack. (sda/afp)
