“Because of the authority’s support for the Hamas massacres,” he had asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to briefly review the continuation of payments in the Cabinet, right-wing extremist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on the X Platform on Monday, formerly Twitter. “Until a decision is made, we will suspend payments,” he wrote.
In his post, Smotrich referred to a compilation of statements from representatives of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party. It describes the terrorist attack as part of the “armed resistance” against the Israeli occupation.
Israel collects taxes and customs duties on behalf of the Palestinian Authority. Recently, around 160 million dollars (about 151 million euros) were transferred to the authority every month. There was initially no response from the Palestinian Authority to Smotrich’s decision.
Abbas said after the massacres that the actions and policies of the Islamist Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, do not represent the Palestinian people. Abbas emphasized that he rejects the killing of civilians on both sides. He called on all involved to release prisoners.
Terrorists carried out massacres of civilians in Israel on behalf of the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip on October 7. More than 1,400 people in Israel were killed during this and subsequent days.
Since then, Israel has been attacking targets in the Gaza Strip. According to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry, 8,306 people were killed.
