Against the backdrop of television images of the “horror” in the Gaza Strip, it was “very easy to abuse the situation, to provoke, to upset people,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday, according to Russian news agencies. the violence the night before at the airport of the Dagestan capital Makhachkala. According to authorities, 20 people were injured and 60 were arrested.

Following the attacks on passengers on a plane landing from Israel, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin plans to hold a meeting on Monday evening to discuss the security situation and attempts to destabilize the West. Peskov said it was clear the riots were caused by foreign interference. The topic of the meeting, which will be attended by the government and representatives of the Russian security apparatus, is “the West’s attempts to use the situation in the Middle East to cause division in Russian society.”

There will be a public statement from Putin about the events and a private part. Peskov recalled that the president gathered Russia’s religious leaders last week against the backdrop of possible tensions between people of different faiths in the multi-ethnic state. Regarding the situation in the Middle East, Putin called for peaceful coexistence. Putin is constantly kept informed of the situation in Dagestan by the domestic secret service, the National Guard and the head of the republic, Peskov said.

Dagestan’s leaders had expressed solidarity with the Palestinians, given the situation in the Middle East. At the same time, local authorities as well as Muslim and many other organizations criticized the violent protests. The region’s Muslim clerics made it clear: “Anti-Semitism has no place in the multi-ethnic North Caucasus.”
