A politician from the right-wing populist AfD who was wanted on an arrest warrant and was recently elected to the Bavarian state parliament has been arrested. 22-year-old Daniel Halemba was arrested around 8 a.m. in the Stuttgart area, a spokesperson for the Würzburg public prosecutor’s office told the German Press Agency on Monday.

Halemba will be brought before the judge in Würzburg on Monday, or at the latest on Tuesday, who can order pre-trial detention.

On Friday, the AfD faction itself announced that there was an arrest warrant for one of its MPs. The public prosecutor then confirmed that it was Halemba. Halemba could not be reached for comment since the arrest warrant. Lawyer Dubravko Mandic, who is representing him according to the Würzburg Public Prosecutor’s Office, rejected the allegations in a statement on Saturday evening: “According to a preliminary assessment, there is no truth in all the allegations against the members of the Prague Teutonia.”

The brotherhood

Halemba says he has been a member of the “Teuronia Prague zu Würzburg Brotherhood” since 2021, which was raided in September. According to the Public Prosecution Service, it was suspected that the fraternity house may contain objects with symbols of the National Socialist Party NSDAP, as well as stickers and writings of a racist nature. Almost all seized items have now been evaluated, the authority’s spokesperson said on Monday. “The allegations have been confirmed for us.” The evaluation of data carriers is still ongoing.

The connection has not yet responded to the accusations at the request of the German news agency. Halemba had previously dismissed all allegations against him as false.

The AfD is classified by the German domestic secret service as a suspected right-wing extremist. At the state elections in Bavaria on October 8, it became the third strongest party with 14.6 percent. (rbu/sda/dpa)
