A new investigation into violence against children in Switzerland, strengthened Marxist groups and new highs in church abandonment: this and more are reported in the Sunday newspapers today, October 29.
A selection of reports from the Sunday press:
According to a study, approximately 32,000 children in Switzerland have experienced parental violence with objects. One in ten children is punished by their parents with slaps in the face, according to a study by the University of Freiburg that was available to the “SonntagsZeitung”. About 48,000 children receive a cold shower. Even more children are insulted, humiliated or locked in their rooms for long periods of time by their parents. The president of the Child Protection Switzerland organization, Yvonne Feri, called for an article in the civil code against any violence against children.
The Palestinian network Samidoun has currently found a safe haven in Switzerland. Germany classified the group as anti-Semitic and extremist, as the “NZZ am Sonntag” wrote. The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is currently preparing a ban on Samidoun in Germany. According to the newspaper, a meeting of forty Samidoun sympathizers took place in Geneva last Tuesday. Activities in Basel and Zurich are also known. Samidoun has a Marxist-Leninist background and tries to infiltrate organizations, an expert told the newspaper. According to “NZZ am Sonntag”, things could quickly become uncomfortable for the group in Switzerland.
The communist movement International Marxist Tendency (IMT) has recently experienced a major revival. In Switzerland the group has 300 active members, as the “SonntagsZeitung” wrote. The number of members has doubled in the past two months, Caspar Oertli of the Swiss IMT section told the newspaper. They stand for expropriation, nationalization and a socialist planned economy. After the Islamic Hamas attacks on Israel, they took a stand for the Palestinians. The universities of Zurich, Bern and Freiburg subsequently withdrew the group’s event space.
The number of people leaving church reached another record high last year. Last year, 34,561 people left the Catholic Church and 30,102 people left the Reformed Church, as ‘SonntagsBlick’ wrote. The figures come from the church statistics of the Swiss Pastoral Sociological Institute. The researchers expect record values again for the current year. The reason for this is also the research by the University of Zurich into more than 1,000 cases of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. The Reformed Church has not yet managed to stop the decline in membership, as the president of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Switzerland, Rita Famos, told SonntagsBlick.
The German Public Prosecution Service in Stuttgart has opened an investigation against a Swiss national after riots during an event in Eritrea. The man, who lives in the canton of Aargau, is accused of particularly serious breach of the peace, the Stuttgart public prosecutor’s office announced to ‘SonntagsBlick’. Due to riots at an Eritrea festival in Opfikon ZH, the Zurich Public Prosecutor’s Office also started an investigation. According to the newspaper, she is investigating fifteen people for extortion and disturbing public order.
Insect migration has decreased in Switzerland due to climate change. “The decline is enormous,” Lisa Fisler of Info Fauna, the national data and information center for Swiss wildlife, told “Le Matin Dimanche”. There are no concrete figures for Switzerland yet. However, it is likely that the Swiss results will be comparable to European studies. In Germany, insect migration fell by 90 percent. Insects migrate to ensure their reproduction all year round. (sda)
