At least 16 killed in explosion at Kazakh mine and half ton of amphetamine seized in Cyprus

At least 16 workers have died in a fire at a coal mine in the Central Asian Republic of Kazakhstan. Another 31 miners were reported missing after the accident in the industrial city of Karaganda. This was reported by the operating company Arcelormittal, according to the Russian news agency Tass. In August, a fatal accident occurred at a mine owned by the international steel company, killing five workers. A government-appointed committee blamed the company for the accident.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has ordered his government to end its investment partnership with Arcelormittal following the recent incident. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

In November 2021, a serious accident also occurred in a coal mine not far from Karaganda, which also belongs to Arcelormittal. At that time, several workers were killed in a methane gas explosion. Several fatal accidents had already occurred at the mine in the city of Abai. (saw/sda/dpa)
