Residents forced to flee: many homes in Queensland have been destroyed by bushfires

Bushfires are making life difficult for people in Queensland.

Residents of the town of Wieambilla, west of Brisbane, were asked to flee immediately as their lives were in danger.

Other places that had been surrounded by flames for days – such as Tara – were also threatened again. Some civilians who had returned to their homes were forced to flee again. “Soon it will be too dangerous to drive,” authorities warned.

“The high temperatures and especially the strong winds are of great concern to us,” says fire brigade spokesman Peter Hollier. In Tara alone, 32 houses have fallen victim to flames in recent days. About 80 separate fires were burning across the east coast region on Friday, according to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES). A total of 20,000 hectares of land was affected.

Stephanie Joels, from Tara, who lost everything she owned, told ABC: “I’m still on a high because I know it’s all gone and I’ve seen images that show it’s all gone.” However, she is not yet allowed to return to her property herself. “I think you can only understand something like that when you see that your memories, your photos, everything is gone.”
