A year after the mass panic that left nearly 160 dead during disorganized Halloween celebrations, affected families have renewed their calls for more intensive research.

The truth behind the disaster has not yet been revealed, the co-chairman of a group of victims’ families, Yu Hyoung Woo, told reporters in the South Korean capital on Thursday. «No one took responsibility and said this is my fault or these are our faults.” Yu’s 22-year-old daughter died at the time.

The night-time disaster on October 29, 2022 in an entertainment district of the metropolis caused horror in the country. In the dense crowd on a narrow side street, countless people fell – they suffocated, were crushed or trampled. A special police team later said a number of failures, including a lack of security measures, contributed to the high number of casualties.

It is still unclear how many officers were on site at the time of the tragedy, lawyer Yun Bok Na of the organization Lawyers for a Democratic Society said on Thursday.

The authorities want to prepare better this year for possible crowds at Halloween celebrations. According to the city government, an “intelligent” network of surveillance cameras will be used to count people during the Halloween season. Halloween always falls on October 31st. (saw/sda/dpa)
