They repelled dozens of attacks and faced off against about a hundred Hamas terrorists: the Israeli Women’s Battalion. The soldiers fought for about 14 hours when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7. First the women defended a military base, then they liberated a kibbutz where the attackers were rampaging.
The soldiers of the “Caracal” combat unit are led by Lieutenant Colonel Ben Yehuda, the “Daily Mail” explains. Twelve female soldiers serve under her. The battalion immediately rushed to the front from different sides when the Hamas terrorists shelled a military post on the Egyptian border. They noted that Hamas had already taken fifty Israeli soldiers hostage. Some of them were injured.
For Yehuda it was clear: she had to pledge her troops for a tough fight: in a speech before the bitter firefight, the lieutenant colonel explained to the twelve-man unit that they were strong and would not be defeated. ‘We will eliminate the terrorists. There is infiltration in Israel and it is spreading. Stay vigilant. You might run into us.” The women’s unit returned fire and managed to eliminate some terrorists. Others fled. While still under fire, the soldiers were able to evacuate the wounded hostages by helicopter, the Daily Mail reported.
Amid the hail of rockets, Yehuda learned that the heavily armed militias had breached the Gaza border fence, overrun several settlements and massacred a dozen civilians. That’s why she also sent an all-female tank crew to the nearby kibbutz Holit. An officer who liberated the kibbutz with the crew says: “The female tank crew members were stationed near our team and they were great. They fought like lionesses. I could hear them on the radio, including their commander, Ben Yehuda, who was operating at the highest level.”
Yehuda praised her unit after the deployment and emphasized that there was no longer any reason to doubt the military capabilities of women. “I hope there is no longer any doubt about the combat soldiers who have triumphed in every encounter with the terrorists. They fought bravely, saved lives and emerged as heroines.”
Military observers in the Israeli media speak of a “well-oiled machine”. The Caracal unit is currently responsible for 11 locations in southern Israel and around the Egyptian border. The troops are preparing for possible ground maneuvers.
The Israeli army has approximately 50,000 female combat troops with a total of 200,000 soldiers on active duty. Women must also perform military service alongside men.
