After further verbal attacks, a judge in New York fined former US President Donald Trump (77) $10,000 (about 9,500 euros).
Judge Arthur Engoron had earlier called Trump to the witness stand for a few minutes in court in Manhattan on Wednesday.
The judge asked Trump to explain who he was referring to when he told the press that Judge Engoron was a “very partisan judge, with next to him a person who was very partisan, perhaps even more partisan than himself.”
“You and Cohen,” Trump responded, claiming to be referring to his former lawyer Michael Cohen, who testified against him that day.
“Are you sure you didn’t mean the person sitting next to him?” Judge Engoron asked, referring to his law clerk.
“Yes, I’m sure,” Trump replied.
However, Judge Engoron found Trump’s statements not credible, he said, and imposed the fine.
Following Trump’s numerous verbal outbursts, the judge had previously ordered all those involved in the trial to refrain from personal attacks on court staff, which would have serious consequences.
The fraud trial concerns allegations by the Public Prosecution Service that the ex-president, his sons and associates manipulated the value of the Trump Organization for years to obtain cheaper loans and insurance contracts.
Republican Trump is not threatened with a prison sentence or a direct impact on his presidential candidacy, but a conviction could cause him major business damage.
The former president wants to be re-elected next year. He is the most promising candidate for the Republican nomination. According to many observers, he is using the trial as election advertising. (SDA/neo)
