US television channel ABC reported that Trump’s former White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, had spoken several times with special investigator Jack Smith’s team – in the federal case against Trump for interference in the 2020 presidential election.

Meadows also testified before a grand jury. In exchange for his testimony under oath, he was promised immunity in the case.

Statements accusing Trump

Meadows told federal investigators that he repeatedly told Trump in the weeks after the election that his claims of widespread voter fraud were baseless. According to the report, Meadows also claimed that Trump was “dishonest” to the public in his claim that he won the election. These types of incriminating statements could potentially harm Trump during the trial, which will begin in March 2024.

Trump is the first ex-president in US history to stand trial for alleged crimes. Federal charges were filed against him in Washington over his efforts to subsequently overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump lost the election to Democrat Joe Biden, but to this day he still won’t admit defeat. Instead, Trump tried to change the election outcome later in several ways. His campaign against the election results culminated in an unprecedented, violent attack by his supporters on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Defendants in Georgia are also turning against Trump

Charges of attempted election interference have also been filed in the state of Georgia against Trump and eighteen other defendants. Meadows is also one of the suspects. He pleaded not guilty, as did Trump.

In the Georgia case, four co-defendants and former Trump supporters recently struck a deal with the prosecutor there: they pleaded guilty to avoid a trial. This means that in the future they could testify against co-defendants and therefore also against Trump. This is a great success for the Public Prosecution Service. (SDA)
