Shortly before 8 p.m. Natalie Lemke wants to put her two-year-old son to bed. Suddenly the doorbell rings – but the woman from Tangendorf near Hamburg (D) is not expecting any visitors.

When she opens it, there are 13 strange men at the door. She soon realizes that they are refugees with suitcases looking for a place to sleep. This is reported by the “Winsener Anzeiger”. The strange incident happened on Thursday.

The refugees must have been as confused as Lemke at first. Communication is difficult because the men speak neither German nor English. But then they show the woman the instructions that the Winsen district council has printed out and given to them. The men had found the address written there, but it was incorrect.

Refugees sent to the wrong village

The refugees would actually be the first residents of the new asylum accommodation in Garstedt – about four kilometers from Tangendorf. An incorrect instruction from the district council led to the misunderstanding: the street and house number of the asylum accommodation are identical to Lemke’s address – but the postal code and place of residence are not. So the refugees were accidentally sent to the wrong place.

But because it was already late in the evening, public transport was no longer running. Lemke eventually called the police to clarify the situation.

The woman reported to the “Winsener Anzeiger” that her wrist reached her neck. She had tears in her eyes and felt unsafe. “And the men can’t do anything about it.”

Employees didn’t look up

Police contacted the home on site. Together they were able to bring the refugees to Garstedt. But Lemke demands clarification from the district administration.

Why were the refugees sent to shelter by public transport in the first place? The affected resident received an apology from the district the next day, the “Winsener Anzeiger” reported. Due to the sharp increase in the number of refugees, it was no longer possible to organize transport services.

“They were the first refugees to come to Garstedt.” We are very sorry for the error in the directions. An employee wasn’t paying attention. (gs)
