The war in Ukraine has been going on for twenty months. Twenty months that have brought enormous suffering to the Ukrainian and Russian people. Since Russia began invading its small neighbor in February 2022, countless Ukrainians and Russians have paid with their lives.

Losses are considered high on both sides. The British Ministry of Defense estimates the number of Russian deaths at 150,000 to 190,000. And this despite the fact that Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin had expected a quick war and a quick annexation of Ukraine.

The enormous resistance from Kiev and the country’s support from the West have thwarted Putin’s war plans. Currently at the center of the fighting: the front line in Avdiivka near Donetsk. Putin is now apparently pursuing a new strategy to make up for the losses.

Russian ruler Putin is using new tactics in the war in Ukraine

Russian forces have been trying for weeks to encircle Avdiivka, a former Donetsk suburb, with massive attacks from the north and south. According to the Institute for War Studies (ISW), Russian forces recently moved additional troops to the local front line despite a failed and costly offensive. So far without success. According to military experts, these are auxiliary attacks for the troops on the southern front to tie down the Ukrainians in the east. The city therefore also has a symbolic meaning.

However, Putin is slowly but surely running out of soldiers. The Russian army is unable to effectively break through the defense lines anywhere. According to American military analyst Michael Kofman, Russia is unable to conduct significant offensive operations without further mobilization, he says in the podcast ‘Russia Contingency’. The Russian army is looking for new tactics.

Putin is now sending women to war against Ukraine

Now Putin apparently relies on women in the war in Ukraine in the future. In the future, they will no longer only work in the kitchen or as medics in the Russian army. They should now also be used in battle, reports the independent internet portal ‘Istories’. Accordingly, the Russian Ministry of Defense is recruiting female snipers and drone operators for the mercenary unit “Redut” and for the volunteer battalion “Borz”.

Money should convince women to participate in the Ukrainian war. There are advertisements that are shown on the Russian social network Wkontakte. The women are offered a six-month contract with a monthly salary of approximately 2,200 euros. In case of injuries, they are promised a bonus of 30,000 euros. If they are killed during action, the contract requires the surviving relatives to be paid 50,000 euros. The promise that beginners will be trained in the use of weapons within a month also indicates how urgently the women are apparently needed.

Women are at risk of being exposed to sexual violence

What the ads don’t say is the price women can pay. There are always independent reports about women in the Russian army being exposed to mass violence and sexual abuse. The perpetrators: Russian officers and soldiers. This also applies to your comrades.

A circumstance that does not matter to the ruler of the Kremlin, as long as he does not lose face. Putin never expected such large losses in the war in Ukraine. Now he needs cannon fodder and is using every resource available.

Due to the numerous soldiers who died, the Russian president announced the mobilization of 300,000 reservists last fall. Experts believe that further mobilization is unlikely, at least at this time. Apparently Putin does not want to anger the population because of the presidential elections scheduled for the spring of 2024 and he now hopes that women will volunteer.
