Drinking surpluses, fights and recently even a stabbing: the party nights on Mallorca’s Playa de Palma in the south of the Balearic Island regularly get out of hand. A new decree should now curb the ever-escalating situation: in the future, rowdy partygoers could even be banned from the island.
Since this year, a new government has come into power in the Balearic Islands, which has a stricter policy against bullying tourists. The new Minister of Tourism Jaume Bauzà (51) finally wants to put an end to the uncivilized behavior of some guests, Spanish media report.
There are currently so-called ‘etiquette rules’ for tourists and a ‘decree against excessive tourism’, but according to Bauzà this package has failed. Until now, guests had to sign rules of conduct when checking in at the hotels on Playa de Palma. With their signature they confirmed that they would not drink on the street and would adhere to the rules of social coexistence. There are also instructions for restaurant owners and bars that prohibit, among other things, alcohol advertising and discount campaigns such as ‘flat rate drinks’. If you don’t follow the rules, you could face fines.
However, according to Bauzà, these rules are a failure. That’s why he’s now forging a new, more effective law. The goal: Tourists who misbehave should now face even higher penalties. There is even talk of a ‘blacklist’ for visitors. However, the stricter measures should not only be introduced on Ballermann, but apply to the entire island.
In the event of future crimes, tourists should be able to be evicted from their hotels. Bauzà repeatedly emphasized to the Balearic Parliament that there could even be a ban on the island – if necessary for life.
In particular, they want to eradicate excessive alcohol consumption and loss of control, as well as the phenomenon of ‘ball king’. The latter is a trend in which drunken tourists in particular jump from balcony to balcony. More serious accidents have happened in Mallorca this year.
The ministry says these regulations are easier to implement for British tourists. Because: Because Great Britain is no longer part of the European Union, the free movement of people is not affected. But the law is still in the making. In the long term, EU citizens must also be held accountable.
The largest island of the Balearic Islands has been trying for years to break away from the image given by a few kilometers of beach and wants to focus on sustainable tourism. The island with its beautiful nature must once again become a holiday paradise where high quality comes first. The new law is expected to be passed before the 2024 summer season. (An)
