Malachi Craine (4) has been looking forward to his Pokémon birthday party for weeks.

Angel Craine, 27, from Scarborough, Queensland, Australia, spent over a month planning the Pokémon party for her four-year-old son Malachi. Craine told Daily Mail Australia he had been looking forward to celebrating the special day with his friends for weeks.

“He was so excited to tell his friends he was getting a vegan chocolate cake. But they turned him away and said they wouldn’t come,” the mother told the Australian newspaper. His friends said they would only come if there was a ‘cow’ in the cake.

Nasty comments from classmates

Malachi’s mother knew that her son was being bullied by other children at school because he was vegan. But Craine, who follows a vegan diet, didn’t think much of it at first. When she changed her diet last year, she didn’t expect the same from her two sons.

But during a visit to a farm, Malachi learned what chicken nuggets are made of. “He loves animals more than anything. When I explained to him that there were chickens in the nuggets and cows in the burgers, he was shocked and never wanted to touch an animal product again,” says Craine.

However, his classmates are bothered by Malachi’s eating habits. The boy only told his mother about the boycott shortly before the big day.

Mom turns to vegan Facebook group

Disappointed but hopeful, Craine thought his school friends would get over it. But as the special day approached, she knew Malachi would have a lonely birthday. “We have not received any response to the invitations,” she says.

When the 27-year-old saw no other way out, she turned to her Facebook friends. In a vegan Facebook group, she invited parents to come to Malachi’s birthday party with their children. And it worked: “Next weekend is the day and we will have about twelve children with us,” says Craine. (gs)
