If the popular opposition politician is convicted of this, he could face several years in prison and a temporary ban from holding political office. Khan denies the allegations.

In early August, the 70-year-old former cricket star was arrested and convicted in a separate case. A higher authority then effectively ordered his release – but he had to remain in prison due to the investigation into the current case. Khan has appealed the ruling that has already been made.

A new parliament will be elected at the end of January in Pakistan, a nuclear power with about 240 million inhabitants. A power struggle is raging in the country between influential family dynasties and the deposed former Prime Minister Khan.
