One argument for Swiss neutrality is its ability to mediate in times of crisis. However, Switzerland played no role at yesterday’s peace summit in Cairo. Not only large EU countries such as Germany and France were present, but also small countries such as Greece and Cyprus.

“Switzerland is in regular contact with all actors in the region and welcomes the conference,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) reassured. “Switzerland’s participation was not planned. Federal Councilor Cassis was informed by telephone by Egyptian Foreign Minister Shoukry about the objectives of the conference.

The Cairo summit produced no concrete results. Above all, the Arab states showed their solidarity with Palestine. Rulers from Cairo to Riyadh, who actually work closely with Israel, fear popular anger and have made even stronger statements on behalf of the Palestinians. Jordan’s King Abdullah II (61) accused Israel of war crimes. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (42) made it clear: “For Germany, the security of the State of Israel is non-negotiable.”

There is demand for the FDFA in the background, but from a very different place. The Federal Public Prosecution Service is investigating whether a formal procedure should be initiated; after all, the Hamas terrorists also murdered a Swiss dual national on October 7. A BA spokeswoman told SonntagsBlick: “The relevant investigations are ongoing. The Federal Public Prosecution Service is in close contact with the EDA and Fedpol and will take all necessary further steps as soon as it has received the necessary information.” l
