Greta Thunberg (20), founder of the global climate protection movement Fridays for Future, caused a stir on Friday with an X-post. Thunberg and three fellow activists pose with posters reading “Free Gaza,” “Free Palestine” and “This Jew stands for Palestine.” Not a word about Israel in the text, no condemnation of the brutal Hamas massacres.
Greta and the three young women campaign for a ceasefire in the war and express their support for the Palestinians. No trace of sympathy for the Israeli and numerous foreign victims. Greta had previously shared a post on Instagram with a ‘genocide’ comparison. She does not mention Hamas in any posts.
A provocation for many. The controversy started. In the meantime, several climate voices have distanced themselves from Greta. The German branch of Fridays for Future posted a clear delineation of Thunberg on Friday evening. “We stand in full solidarity with Jews who face anti-Semitic violence around the world and here,” it said. But they also see the suffering of civilians in Gaza and are concerned about anti-Muslim racism.
Under increasing pressure, Greta probably felt the need to explain. Earlier on Sunday, she herself commented As I said: ‘The world must raise its voice and demand an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for the Palestinians and all affected civilians.'”
Once again: not a word of sympathy for the victims of terror. She also does not think it necessary to at least call Israel by name. On the other side, a single hashtag: “StandWithPalestine”. (kes)
