In Colombia, prosecutors have seized a building that housed a secret museum containing artifacts belonging to Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, who was murdered in 1993. The seized property in Medellín, in the country’s northwest, was bought by Escobar with money he earned as leader of the Medellín cartel in the 1980s and 1990s, according to a statement released by the prosecutor’s office on Friday. The value is estimated at around twelve billion pesos (about 2.83 million euros).
Photos showed a car and a motorcycle in display cases, as well as paintings, photographs and even life-size figures of the famous drug trafficker. Roberto Escobar, Pablo Escobar’s brother, lived in the house, the prosecutor said. He arranged for the property to be transferred to the current owner to avoid prosecution by the state.
Escobar’s Medellín Cartel was one of the most powerful drug organizations in the world. The cartel controlled the entire smuggling chain, from coca cultivation to the sale of the drugs on the streets of New York. In December 1993, an elite Colombian police commando shot dead the world’s most wanted drug lord in his hometown of Medellín. A Colombian non-governmental organization blames Escobar for about 50,000 deaths from his drug war. (AFP)
