Special exhibition ‘Shabbat Food’ at the Tel Aviv Museum: a seat for every hostage

Empty long table in Tel Aviv, with an orange children’s place setting.

First, the long table that seems endless is empty, with empty plates and empty chairs. These include child seats. Little by little the table is laid and bread and wine are served. Plus apples and flowers. Also for the children. Nobody eats.

The seats remain empty. The guests are in Hamas power. Each chair and each spot is symbolic of each of the 203 hostages Hamas has held for two weeks.

Empty Shabbat sign

The long table – a special exhibit at the Tel Aviv Museum on Friday titled “Shabbat Food” – is set for 203 guests, including the approximately 30 children in the terrorists’ hands.

Two of the first hostages – an American mother and her daughter – were released late Friday. 201 hostages remain in fear for their lives – along with their family members and friends.

Biden misunderstanding?

Hostage poker initially appears to work for Hamas. Even after US President Joe Biden (80) conceded, Israel appears to be further postponing the ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, which has been expected for a week.

Asked by reporters whether Israel should delay an invasion of Gaza until more hostages can be released, Biden responded late on Friday, according to Reuters: “Yes.”

The White House walked back Biden’s response shortly afterwards. White House communications director Ben LaBolt, 42, said he didn’t quite understand the question from a distance: ‘The president was far away. He didn’t quite hear the question. The question sounded like, ‘Would you like to see more hostages released?’” Biden “did not comment on anything else.” (kes)
