During a rally in the West Bank on Friday, Palestinians marched with portraits of Russia’s Vladimir Putin (71) and Russian flags. The meeting took place in the city of Hebron in the southern part of the region, also known as the West Bank. A photo of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un (39) was also held up.
Since the 1997 Hebron Protocol, most of the city, with approximately 170,000 Palestinians, has been governed by the Palestinian Authority. Israel controls a small part of the city, inhabited by about 30,000 Palestinians and home to about 800 Jews.
Hebron is often called a ‘microcosm’ of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. Hebron is the largest city in Palestine and the trading center of the West Bank. (kes)
