Hamas, Hezbollah – and now also the Houthi rebels from Yemen: the front against Israel in the Middle East is widening. The US Navy destroyer “USS Carney” shot down three cruise missiles and several drones in the northern Red Sea on Thursday. According to US information, they were launched by Houthi rebels in Yemen. “We cannot say with certainty where these missiles and drones were aimed, but they were launched from northern Yemen over the Red Sea, possibly at targets in Israel,” US Defense Department spokesman Patrick Ryder said in Washington on Thursday. .

Concerns about an even greater escalation with unforeseeable consequences are increasing. The Houthis are backed by Iran and control large parts of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa. They have been at war with a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia since 2015.

Warning for the US

On October 10, Yemen’s Houthi leader Abdul-Malik Badreddine al-Huthi warned the United States in a televised speech against direct military intervention on behalf of Israel. The Houthis are “fully coordinated with our brothers in the jihad and resistance front” and are ready to provide any assistance requested of them. The Yemeni people are ready to send “hundreds of thousands of mujahideen to Palestine.”

The Houthi leader warned the United States not to cross certain “red lines,” for example by increasing support for Israel or intervening militarily. “They are currently providing assistance to the Israeli enemy,” al-Houthi said. “If they intervene directly, we are ready to join the fight, with missile strikes, drones or whatever other military option we have.”

Missiles for Hezbollah?

According to Iranian information, the Houthis have missiles with a range of about 2,000 kilometers, which is approximately the distance between Yemen and Israel. Even if the missiles cannot reach Israel from Yemen, the Houthis could deliver the missiles to allied Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The United States has deployed a significant number of naval forces to the Middle East in the past week, including two aircraft carriers with escort ships and about 2,000 Marines. Ryder, the US Department of Defense spokesman, said the actions of the crew of the “USS Carney” demonstrated US defense capabilities in the Middle East. The US is prepared to use it if necessary to protect its partners and interests in the region.

After the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7, Israel responded with massive airstrikes in the Gaza Strip. Since then, violent incidents have occurred repeatedly at the Israel-Lebanon border. There have already been deaths on both sides. On Thursday, three people were injured by rockets fired from Lebanon in the northern border town of Kiriat Shmona.
