First floods on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast Zelensky promises reforms – the nightly update on the war in Ukraine

The storm surge caused the first streets and coastal areas on the German Baltic Sea coast to be flooded. On Friday morning, numerous streets in Wismar, Kiel and Flensburg were already flooded.

“The water is coming, it has already come a long way, it is already at the door,” a spokeswoman for the Flensburg police told the German news agency.

In Kiel, several beach chairs had already been pulled into the water in Schiksee on Thursday afternoon. “The water is unusually high there. “About 150 beach chairs were found there,” said a police spokeswoman.

The storm surge in the Baltic Sea is expected to reach its peak on Friday evening. Along the entire coast in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, water levels will rise 1.50 meters or more above mean high tide, a spokeswoman for the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency in Rostock said.

The hotspot will be the Flensburg Fjord. The water there can rise up to 2.00 meters above average high tide. Water levels will be lower further south and east, the spokeswoman said. In the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the flooding will only reach the level of a heavy storm surge near the Bay of Lübeck. (sda/dpa)
