Some elite Ukrainian troops from the Ukrainian Naval Brigade have crossed the largest Ukrainian river, the Dnipro, north of Kiev, and have already recaptured two villages. This is reported by the Kiev Post newspaper.

The strength of the troops and Kiev’s future plans for operations on the left bank of Ukraine’s largest flood defense remain unclear. According to a Russian Telegram channel from RybarZ, four amphibious assault teams of the Ukrainian Naval Brigade crossed the river. The whole affair is said to have taken place near the river town of Pridnistrosk on the right bank, writes the Kyiv Post.

The Ukrainian Navy apparently encountered little to no resistance and was able to advance towards the villages of Poima and Pishchanivka.

Static fighting near the river

According to Russian blogger Vladimir Rogov, the situation around the areas is static. Both sides must shoot each other with artillery and mortars. Attack drones will also be deployed, the Kyiv Post reports.

The blogger further explained that the Ukrainian reconnaissance units also landed on boats and operated in the villages of Krynok and on Kazatsky Island. The troops of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) in these locations are said to have acted more as raiders and not as regular infantry. It does not appear that the Ukrainian armed forces intend to hold their positions, Rogov said. The Kiev Post could not confirm this.

Major Ukrainian offensive unlikely

In Prydniprovske, about 10 km upstream from the Ukrainian city of Kherson, was one of the few railway crossings of the Dnipro. The strategically important railway bridge was blown up by retreating Russian troops in November 2022. However, their foundations could be used by Ukrainian forces trying to re-bridge the river, the newspaper reported.

So far, the Kyiv Post has found no evidence that the Ukrainian military wants to use ferries or so-called assault bridges to further expand the offensive on the Left Bank. Using ferries or assault bridges, the army could theoretically transport tanks and other artillery and infantry to the other bank.

Attacks north and south of Kherson

Ukrainian special operations forces, operating in small boats, launched a series of raids and river assaults north and south of Kherson in May. In most cases, they withdrew before Russian reserves could respond, the Kyiv Post reported, citing Ukrainian military information. Ukrainian infantrymen from the Territorial Defense conducted foot patrols in the region in July and August.

The Russian army was largely unable to attack the Ukrainians. According to the report, the reason was Ukrainian long-range artillery. Russia has intensified airstrikes on Ukrainian patrols and suspected patrol locations in recent weeks.

Combat operations or just training?

There was no mention of hostilities in recent reports on Ukraine’s activities by the Kiev-sanctioned “AFU StratCom” Telegram channel. Instead, the channel reported on amphibious infantry. They are said to have conducted shooting exercises on an unknown training ground.

The 36th Marine Brigade posted images and videos on its own information channels. This showed that the unit was involved in fighting in the eastern sector around the villages of Opytne and Vodiyane until the second half of September. The troops trained there only until mid-October.
