A danger to the AfD?: Sahra Wagenknecht is setting up her own party

Left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht (54) dares to take the leap into the unknown and sets up her own party. Spiegel reports this. As the magazine writes, citing several sources close to her, she will make her plans public at a press conference in Berlin on Monday.

Wagenknecht’s founding of the party is likely to cause particular concern for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has been on the rise in recent weeks. The reason: many AfD supporters sympathize with the 54-year-old. As “Deutsche Welle” reports, it is entirely possible that AfD voters would instead give their vote to Wagenknecht’s new party.

Leftists demand Wagenknecht’s expulsion from the party

Wagenknecht and her closest party members have been talking about setting up a new party for months. At the end of September, as a possible preparatory step, an association called “BSW – for reason and justice” was registered at the Mannheim court – the abbreviation would stand for “Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht”.

At the press conference on Monday, Wagenknecht will first publicly present the establishment of the association ‘BSW’, reports the ‘Spiegel’ from her area. A substantive document is also presented, a kind of concept program.

Because of their plans for their own party, more than fifty left-wing members are now calling for Wagenknecht’s expulsion from the party.

As the report goes on to say, Wagenknecht will provide a “clear view” at the federal press conference on the founding of the party for which the association is intended. As things stand now, Wagenknecht does not want to announce her departure from the left, nor her departure from the Bundestag faction. (dzc/AFP)
