ADF terrorists killed two tourists from Britain and South Africa and their Ugandan guide in Uganda on Tuesday. Images distributed by police show two of the victims lying dead on the ground and the safari vehicle on fire.
The massacre took place near Queen Elizabeth National Park in southwestern Uganda. The two tourists were apparently on a gorilla safari.
Fred Enanga, a police spokesman, said in a statement that extremist rebels, normally based in the east of the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, carried out the “cowardly terrorist attack,” according to the Guardian. According to Enanga, Ugandan security forces pursued the terrorist militia.
According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), which manages the park named after the late queen, the trio were traveling with Gorilla and Wildlife Safaris, a local tour company.
A spokesperson called the incident ‘horrific’. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families and relatives of the victims and share their grief at this difficult time.”
The group is affiliated with the Central African branch of the Islamist terrorist militia IS (Islamic State) and operates mainly in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to the Guardian, cross-border attacks are rare. In June, Islamists attacked and set fire to a school and its dormitories in the town of Mpdonwe, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing more than 42 people. 37 children died. Several were kidnapped.
Eastern Congo is considered one of the most dangerous and unstable regions in the world. There are said to be approximately 130 different armed groups active throughout the country. They are particularly interested in the region’s mineral resources. (neo)
