Attack in Brussels: Highest terror level lifted – probably sole perpetrator Will hardliner Jordan win the elections? The U.S. House of Representatives will vote today on the top job

Following the attack on two Swedish football fans in Brussels, the terror level for the Belgian capital has been lowered again. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced on Tuesday that it is currently not assumed that there is a network, but of an individual perpetrator.

After the deadly shots on Monday evening, the highest level of terror was declared for Brussels. Now only the second highest level should apply to the capital – just like the rest of the country.

The suspected perpetrator was shot dead by the police early Tuesday morning. The investigators had previously searched all night for the 45-year-old rejected asylum seeker from Tunisia.

The motives for the crime are still unclear. According to researchers, possible factors include a radical Islamist background and the Swedish nationality of the victims. This year, activists in Sweden and later in Denmark burned copies of the Koran several times, sparking angry reactions among Muslims. At least one of the victims is said to have been wearing a Swedish football shirt. (sda/dpa)
