A man who had been imprisoned innocently for almost sixteen years was shot dead by a police officer during a traffic stop. The background was initially unclear.
Leonard Cure was found innocent in 2020 after 16 years in prison and was only awarded damages a few weeks ago, according to the Innocence Project Florida (“Innocence Project Florida”), which represented Cure in court. The group stands up for people who may have been wrongfully convicted.
Cure, 53, was shot by a police officer Monday morning during a traffic stop on Federal Highway 95 at the Georgia-Florida border, a Georgia state investigative agency said. During the check, he initially got out of the car at the police officer’s request. However, when he heard that he was about to be arrested, he resisted. The police officer then used a stun gun, but was attacked by Cure. Finally the police officer fired. Cure died despite emergency medical treatment. The authority is now investigating at the request of the responsible sheriff’s office.
Cure was convicted in 2003 for an attack he did not commit, the Innocence Project wrote. He now wanted to buy a house and study music production in order to work in the music industry. (sda/dpa)
