Attacker at French school declares allegiance to IS after fatal knife attack. Final result after elections in Poland: opposition wins majority

Before the knife attack on a school in northern France that left one dead last Friday, the radicalized perpetrator claimed responsibility for the terrorist militia ‘Islamic State’ (IS).

A corresponding audio message was found in the arrested 20-year-old’s mobile phone in which the perpetrator also expressed his hatred of France, the French and democracy, anti-terrorism prosecutor Jean-François Ricard said in Paris on Tuesday. In addition, twenty minutes before the crime, the perpetrator recorded a threatening video at a secondary school in Arras, in which he said he wanted to attack French values.

The prosecutor said the knife attacker, a younger brother and a cousin should be investigated. The 16-year-old brother would have supported the attacker to a certain extent and the nephew, as someone who was aware of the attack plan, would have done nothing to prevent its execution.

The perpetrator, from Chechnya, stabbed a teacher during his attack. These and three other injured people, who are now on the mend, stood in the young man’s way. The funeral of the murdered teacher is scheduled for next Thursday in the presence of President Emmanuel Macron. After the attack, France imposed the highest terror alert level and mobilized 7,000 soldiers from the anti-terrorist unit ‘Sentinelle’. (saw/sda/dpa)
