Hamas did not stop at women, the elderly, the sick or even children. It is said that 199 Israeli hostages have been abducted by Hamas to the Gaza Strip. It is not known exactly where they are and how they are doing.
One person who has negotiated with Hamas in the past is the activist Gershon Baskin (67). In 2011, he played a key role in the release of an Israeli soldier held hostage by Hamas.
In exchange for the soldier, Israel released more than a thousand fighters; the soldier escaped physically unharmed. But the current war has another dimension. “As far as I know, Israel is offering Hamas 43 female prisoners and 190 minors who are in prison or in administrative detention – and Israel will not offer anything more,” Baskin said in an interview with “Spiegel.”
This is a deal that Israel’s emergency government could accept. According to the activist, there would then be a ceasefire of 24 to 48 hours. During this time, prisoners could be exchanged and relief supplies such as water, food and medicine could be transported to Gaza.
However, it is not yet clear if and when such a deal can be concluded. After all, Hamas exchanged one prisoner for more than a thousand Palestinians in 2011. Now it would be 199 against 233.
A significantly worse deal, but no obstacle for the expert: “A week ago, Hamas would certainly have rejected such a deal. But I think they’re starting to understand the situation they’re in. You’re at the end. Hamas will be destroyed.”
However, the negotiations will certainly not be easy, because Hamas is not the only one that has taken hostages. “Islamic Jihad took some, and civilians also took hostages.” Moreover, it must be done quickly, because “once the offensive starts, negotiations are no longer possible.”
Israel will still try, but Hamas will not agree to an exchange: “Some hostages will be rescued. Some will die. The only thing that is certain is that the hostages will not survive,” Baskin is convinced. (jl)
