President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, threatened to sever diplomatic relations with Israel in response to the country’s decision to suspend exports of security materials because of its stance on a new war in the region.
“If we have to cut off foreign relations with Israel, we will cut them off. We do not support genocides. The President of Colombia is not offended,” wrote Petro on the X social network.
The president called on “Latin America to show true solidarity with Colombia. If it is not capable, the development of history will be the one that will say the last word as in the great war in Chaco,” he said in an apparent reference to the conflict between Paraguay and Bolivia, which was fought between 1932 and 1935, but without explaining the relationship with the real condition.
Israel’s government announced on Sunday that it had suspended exports of security materials to Colombia in response to “hostile and anti-Semitic statements” by Petra, who has expressed support on social media the Palestinian cause with criticism of Israel and without explicit condemnation of Hamas terrorism.
The decision was made after the Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned the ambassador Colombia in Israel, Margarita Manjarrez, to express her rejection of Peter’s words on the social networks of a part of Hamas.
“At the meeting, the ambassador was made clear that her statements were received in Israel with dismay at the savage attack by Hamas terrorists who killed more than 1,300 Israelis and kidnapped more than 150,” a Defense Ministry spokesman said. Israel, Lior Haiat.
The President of Colombia also announced on Sunday that the country “will send humanitarian aid to Gaza seeking Egypt’s support” to which he added that “the UN must convene the General Assembly in an extraordinary manner”.
Petro, who has verbally clashed with the international Jewish community since the beginning of the war and even compared the situation in Gaza to the Auschwitz concentration camp in World War II, did not specify how much aid would be, what it would consist of, or how it would get to Gaza.
The conflict between Israel and Palestine, which escalated a week ago after an unprecedented attack by the Islamist militia Hamas on Israeli soil and Israel’s disproportionate response against the Gaza Strip, which plunged its nearly two million inhabitants into a humanitarian crisis. commented Petro on his social networks.
This Sunday, the president continued his publications and messages in this regard to the Israeli-Palestinian conflictrepublished an article about “how Israel supported Hamas to divide the Palestinian movement,” as well as Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica” painted in the colors of the Palestinian flag and a message from Pope Francis asking “for humanitarian law to be respected, especially in Gaza.”
