A knife attacker has killed one person and injured several people at a high school in Arras, northern France.

The perpetrator has been arrested by police, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Friday. The police are present at the school. The police prefecture announced that the situation was under control and that there was no longer any danger. The background to the crime is still completely unclear. The anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office says it has taken over the investigation.

As broadcaster BFMTV reported, the perpetrator killed one teacher and injured another. Earlier he had shouted: ‘God is great’. The attacker also injured a Gambetta High School employee. So students were not injured. President Emmanuel Macron wants to come to the scene. The parliament in Paris suspended its session and Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne canceled a trip.

The attacker and his brother, who was also arrested, are believed to be from Chechnya. reported the newspaper “Le Figaro” with reference to the Ministry of the Interior.
