Much of France’s public transport has been disrupted as a result of a nationwide strike against the rising cost of living. About half of the regional train traffic is canceled, reports the railway company SNCF.
Several unions have declared a national strike day today. This is especially true for the public sector and the transport sector.
The demonstrations have a friendly character:
There is also resistance to the actions. The news channel BFMTV reports based on an opinion poll that 39 percent of the population support the call for a nationwide strike day. About half are against it.
The dissatisfaction of the demonstrators is directed against the actions of the government. Protesters believe the government is doing too little to address the problem of soaring prices.
The protests are a continuation of the ongoing industrial dispute between energy giant TotalEnergies and unions that has left fuel shortages across the country.
The French government considers the strikes there disproportionate and has ordered workers to resume work at at least two TotalEnergies sites this week.
