Dozens dead: serious attack on displaced persons camp in Myanmar

At least 29 people have reportedly been killed in a serious attack by the ruling military junta on a displaced persons camp in Myanmar. The attack took place late Monday evening in a camp near the city of Laiza, in the north of the former Burma, local media and residents of the region reported. At least 13 children were among the victims, Lu Kira, who helps people in the camp, told the German Press Agency.

“It is not yet clear how the people died and whether the camp was attacked from the ground or from the air,” she said. A local rebel spokesman said nearly 60 were injured. Emergency services searched under the rubble for more victims.

Laiza in Kachin State bordering China is controlled by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), one of the oldest and most powerful rebel groups in the multi-ethnic state. She is fighting against the army, which seized power in a coup in February 2021. The generals had deposed the then de facto head of government, Aung San Suu Kyi, and have since brutally suppressed any resistance. Nobel Peace Prize winner Suu Kyi (78) is in prison.

Aung Hein Min, activist and former member of Suu Kyi’s NLD party, said: “I was two kilometers away when the attack happened. “First we heard artillery fire three times and then a terrible bang.” KIA spokesperson Naw Bu confirmed that the exact circumstances of the incident were still unclear.
