American Institute: Kremlin will use the situation in Israel for war in Ukraine
From the point of view of American experts, Russia is to exploit the Islamist Hamas’s attacks on Israel for its war against Ukraine. In an information campaign, the Kremlin accuses the West of neglecting the conflicts in the Middle East in favor of supporting Ukraine, the Institute for War Studies (ISW) in Washington wrote in an analysis on Saturday (local time). For example, the experts pointed out that the Russian Foreign Ministry recently accused the West of blocking the efforts of the Middle East Quartet, which includes Russia, the US, the EU and the United Nations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow, Russia has done so too Contacts with the Islamist Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, which has been classified as a terrorist organization by the US, EU and Israel. For example, the Kremlin’s representative for the Middle East, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, has held talks with Hamas representatives several times this year – on the phone and in personal meetings. According to the ministry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday reiterated Moscow’s initiative for a two-state solution.

Russian commentators assumed that Hamas’s war against Israel would divert attention from Ukraine, as the West now wanted to extinguish the “eternal fire” in the Middle East. However, Russian politicians expressed hope that the IT specialists and other experts who fled to Israel because of Moscow’s war against Ukraine would be able to flee the new violence there and return to their home countries. Israel is one of the most popular emigration destinations for Russians with Jewish roots, who can obtain citizenship there relatively easily. (sda/dpa)

Zelensky: Israel has the right to self-defense
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed Israel’s right to self-defense after the major attack by the militant Hamas. Terror should have no place in the world because it is not directed against a specific country or person, but against all humanity, Zelenskyj wrote on Facebook on Saturday. “Israel’s right to self-defense is indisputable.”

Ukraine has been defending itself against a large-scale Russian invasion for almost twenty months. A contact point has been set up in the consular missions for citizens of Ukraine in Israel, he wrote. (sda/dpa)

The Ukrainian army reports a “partial success” of its attacks
The Ukrainian military says it continues to attack Russian forces on two key sectors of the front, in the east and south. South of the town of Bakhmut in the east there is “partial success” in the village of Andriivkathe General Staff in Kiev said in its situation report on Saturday morning.

While Bakhmut itself is in Russian hands, the Ukrainians have retaken a strategically important railway line south of it in recent weeks. They are now expanding their positions on the other side of the track.

On the southern front in the Zaporizhia region, there were also “partial successes” north of the villages of Kopani and Novoprokopivka, it was said. In this region, Ukrainian troops have been fighting their way through heavily fortified Russian defense lines with minefields, anti-tank barriers and trenches for weeks. The fighting at Kopani And Novoprokopivka indicate that the Ukrainians are increasing their point of penetration into Russian defenses.

The military information is often not independently verifiable. However, the Institute for War Studies ISW in the US also mentioned this Ukrainian progress in its new report. At the same time, the ISW wrote that the Russian army had managed to exchange troops on this part of the front despite Ukrainian pressure. (sda/dpa)
