After several major earthquakes in Afghanistan, the death toll has risen to more than 2,000, according to the latest authorities. The number of people killed in the earthquake is “very high” and now amounts to “more than a thousand”, Taliban government deputy spokesman Bilal Karimi told AFP news agency on Sunday. The magnitude 6.3 earthquake shook the region around the provincial capital Herat on Saturday, followed by several strong aftershocks.
The day before, authorities had spoken of 120 deaths and more than a thousand injuries. “Women, children and the elderly” were also affected, the head of the disaster management authority in western Herat province, Mosa Ashari, told the AFP news agency on Saturday. Another official said a further significant increase in casualties was expected.
According to Afghan information and according to the American Earthquake Service USGS, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3. The center of the earthquake was 40 kilometers northwest of Herat, the largest city in the region. Authorities later reported eight aftershocks with magnitudes between 4.3 and 6.3. Upon initial assessment of the situation, U.S. authorities believed that hundreds of casualties were possible. Intermittent telephone connections prevented many people from reaching their relatives.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 600 houses have been destroyed or partially damaged in at least 12 villages in Herat province, meaning around 4,200 people have been affected. Disaster management agency spokesman Mullah Jan Sajek told AFP the death toll was expected to “rise very high”. The Foreign Ministry in Berlin spoke of hundreds of deaths as a result of the earthquake and expressed its condolences to the relatives of the earthquake victims and the injured.
In June last year, more than a thousand people were killed when a magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook impoverished Paktika province. Tens of thousands of people also lost their homes. (SDA/AFP/chs)
