A siren alarm has been sounding in Israel since Saturday morning. After the Islamist organization Hamas, which rules Gaza, fired hundreds of rockets into Israel, the heavily armed attackers also entered Israel, firing shots and kidnapping scores of Israelis back to Gaza.

It was initially unknown how the attackers reached Israel. It is now clear: the Palestinians invaded Israel on Saturday by land, sea and air. The Israeli army announced this.

Thousands of missiles

Israeli army spokesman Richard Hecht told journalists that fighting is currently taking place with Israeli soldiers in several locations in the Gaza Strip. These include two military bases, the Eres crossing into the Gaza Strip and several towns.

There are casualties on the Israeli side, but figures cannot yet be given. Israeli media reported that hostages had been taken, but there was initially no official confirmation of this.

In addition, more than 2,200 rockets were fired at Israeli cities. Hecht said Israel has launched Operation Iron Swords in response to massive attacks from the Palestinian territory.

It was initially unclear how exactly the militant Palestinians were able to enter Israel despite strict border controls. Hecht said that gliders, among other things, were used. He could not name the number of attackers. “It wasn’t one or two.”

The army is mobilizing thousands of reservists. “The military is preparing its response,” Hecht said. A suitable place and time will be determined. “We understand how serious the situation is, but we want to respond in a thoughtful manner.”

Hecht said they were also prepared for possible attacks on Israel’s northern border.
