Rocket hail in Israel: Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip launched a major attack on Israel on Saturday morning. At least four people were killed and fifteen others were injured.
While the Islamic organization Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, has declared the start of a military operation against Israel, the Israelis have declared a state of war. Blick answers the most important questions about current events.
Palestinian militants fired hundreds of rockets at Israel in the Gaza Strip on Saturday morning. The Palestinian organization Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the EU, the US and Israel, even spoke of 5,000 rockets. Sirens sounded in many cities, and Jerusalem was also hit.
The major attack killed at least four people and injured scores of others. Paramedics reported injuries in the areas of Ashkelon, Gedera and Javne.
In addition, numerous armed fighters from the Gaza Strip entered Israel. The army spoke of terrorists and urged all residents not to leave their homes.
According to sources from the Islamist Hamas organization that rules the Gaza Strip, the invaders have also kidnapped Israelis in the coastal strip. However, initially there was no confirmation of this from the Israeli army.
Tensions between Hamas and Israelis have escalated in recent weeks. There have been several violent protests in which explosives were thrown at soldiers and several Palestinians were injured by gunfire.
Still, the attack came as a surprise. According to American journalist Trey Yingst of Fox News, the Israelis have seen no signs that such a thing will happen.
The Islamist Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, this morning announced the start of a military operation against Israel. There was talk of a so-called ‘Al-Aqsa flood’. As military chief Mohammed Deif (58) announced in a message, the decision was made to put an end to Israeli ‘crimes’.
Shortly afterwards, the Israeli army declared a state of war on Saturday. The Israeli military said that “a number of terrorists” had entered Israel from the Gaza Strip. The military said it was a “combined attack” by Hamas, involving rocket fire and “terrorist infiltrations.”
Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967. The Palestinians claim these areas for an independent state of Palestine with the Arab-dominated eastern part of Jerusalem as its capital. (dzc/SDA/AFP)
