Local media said rescue efforts were hampered by bad weather and damaged infrastructure in the stricken small northeastern state of Sikkim, bordering China, Nepal and Bhutan. Bridges and houses were lost in the accident. It was one of the worst extreme weather events in the region in decades.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army warned against the flushing of firearms and explosives as military camps were also damaged in the process. She called on people not to touch the military equipment and instead alert the police. Earlier, in West Bengal state bordering Sikkim, two people died and others were injured after they hit a mortar floating in the Teesta river, police said.

It rained heavily in Sikkim on Wednesday night, which, among other things, caused a sharp rise in the level of the Teesta river. A glacial lake in the mountainous area also overflowed and a dam burst.
