A month and a half after the death of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash in Russia, Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin (70) announced that shrapnel had been discovered in the remains of the crash victims. The head of the Investigative Committee informed him a few days ago that “fragments of hand grenades” had been found in the bodies of the crash victims, Putin said on Thursday. At the same time, he assured: “There was no external impact on the aircraft.”
After the death of the mercenary leader, suspicions arose that Putin had had his opponent eliminated. Now the Russian president offers a strange explanation for the death of the shady entrepreneur: Putin claimed that the Wagner members on board got drunk during the flight and were using live grenades. The explosives eventually detonated and caused the plane to crash.
The private plane carrying the head of the Russian mercenary group crashed on August 23 during a flight from Moscow to St. Petersburg. In addition to the Wagner boss, his deputy Dmitri Utkin and eight other people were also killed.
Russian investigators did not comment on whether they believed an assassination attempt, a technical defect or human error was the likely cause of the crash. Ukraine and Western countries had suspected that it was an act of revenge by the Kremlin. Moscow has rejected this.
Prigozhin fell out of favor with Putin after his Wagner troupe’s uprising against the Russian military leadership on June 23. The Kremlin boss considered Wagner’s boss a traitor.
