After an inexplicable incident during an election campaign: German AfD leader leaves hospital Major annoyance: Rishi Sunak is criticized by his predecessors

According to his office, German AfD leader Tino Chrupalla is still being treated in intensive care at a Bavarian hospital.

According to his party, AfD leader Tino Chrupalla left the city again after the yet unexplained incident during an AfD election campaign event in Ingolstadt on Wednesday. “Tino Chrupalla has now been able to leave Ingolstadt and will receive further medical treatment,” said an AfD press release on Thursday evening. All planned election campaign dates in Bavaria have been cancelled. A new state parliament will be elected in the Free State this Sunday.

What exactly led to Chrupalla’s hospitalization is still unclear. The co-chairman of the right-wing populist party attended an election campaign in Ingolstadt on Wednesday. Before the start of a planned speech, he had to receive medical care backstage and was then taken to the clinic. Police had reported that “no obvious injuries” were visible at the time.

It continued: “To clarify the detailed circumstances of this medical incident, further investigation was conducted by the Ingolstadt Criminal Police Inspectorate.” A spokesperson for the Upper Bavaria North police station in Ingolstadt said on Thursday morning that there was no new information.

Police still have no evidence of a physical attack on the AfD leader from the public. As far as we know so far, the events took place behind the stage. The AfD’s federal office had spoken of an “attack incident”.

Weidel decided not to appear

Chrupalla is one of the two chairmen of the partly right-wing extremist party. Co-leader Alice Weidel decided not to make a planned public appearance in Bavaria on Tuesday, the day of German Unity. A spokesperson said a “safety-related incident” had occurred over the weekend. On Wednesday it was announced that Weidel is currently in Mallorca.

The AfD (Alternative for Germany), founded in 2013, is the fifth strongest parliamentary group in the Bundestag, but ranks second in current national surveys in terms of voter advantage with values of over 20 percent. State elections will take place on Sunday in Bavaria and Hesse, where the AfD scores between 14 and 16 percent in surveys.

According to studies, the party could even become the strongest party in three state elections in several eastern German states at the end of summer 2024. (sda/dpa)
