Fentanyl and migration, Blinken’s agenda in Mexico

He United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinkenhe arrived in Mexico this Wednesday for a two-day visit where he will meet with that country’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and other Mexican authorities to tackle the crisis fentanyl and migration.

The plane of the head of US diplomacy landed around 16:45 local time (22:45 GMT) at Felipe Ángeles airport, on the outskirts of Mexico City, one of the symbolic infrastructure works of the López Obrador government.

Blinken will hold a meeting on migration this Wednesday with Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena, in which it is Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Álvaro Leyva; and from Panama, Janaina Tewaney.

On Thursday, High-level dialogue on security between the Mexican and American governments, where drug and arms trade, as well as migration, will be on the table.

At the end, a press conference by Blinken and Bárcena is expected, and later the Secretary of State will end his visit with a meeting with López Obrador at the National Palace.

The administration of US President Joe Bidenwants Mexico to extradite more drug traffickers and dismantle more clandestine laboratories for fentanyl, the powerful synthetic opioid that has caused a record number of overdose deaths in the United States.

In addition, the visit comes after the US Border Patrol arrested the largest number of undocumented immigrants to date in August of this year.

Blinken is accompanied by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas; Attorney General Merrick Garland; and White House Security Adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall.

The person in charge of Department of Foreign Affairs for Latin America, Brian Nichols, as well as the same department’s narcotics chief, Todd Robinson.
