Anyone who follows the news surrounding the fatal bus accident in Venice can only imagine what terrible things those affected and the local population have had to endure. A tour bus fell off a bridge there on Tuesday evening, killing at least 21 people.
The bus would take a total of 40 tourists from Venice back to their campsite. For reasons that are still unclear, he left the road and fell 15 meters next to the track of the railway line between Mestre and Marghera. There the vehicle caught fire, which complicated rescue efforts.
According to transport company “La Linea”, the driver had been on the road for 90 minutes before the accident. The vehicle was also said to be in good condition. “It was a new bus, less than a year old. He was a good driver and drove with us for five or six years.” said company boss Massimo Fiorese.
The Public Prosecution Service has started an investigation into the circumstances of the crime. According to Italian Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, a sudden malaise or illness of the driver is a possibility. According to media reports, no skid marks were visible at the accident scene, which would strengthen this theory.
Meanwhile, the Italian portal “today.it” reports this about the courageous efforts of two passers-by who helped the people on the spot immediately after the accident.
The portal quotes a Gambian worker who has just completed his shift at the nearby factory of Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri. According to the report, he and a colleague became heroes on Tuesday evening.
Rai journalist Giacomo Segantini shared a photo of the helpers on X:

Boubacar Toure, 27, said he helped firefighters, who were first to reach the burning bus, free four people, including a little girl, from the wreckage and turn them over to emergency services. “In addition to them, I was also able to free a small dog,” said the young man.
Toure also described what he and his colleague saw as they approached the burning bus. “I saw the driver in the cab of the bus, but he was already dead,” he said. “The firefighter then told me that we had to think about the living and the injured, so I helped him get those people out,” he said.
The head of government of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said on Wednesday that of the 15 injured, five were in “very serious condition”. The identities of a number of injured people are still unclear. A Venice municipality employee told the AFP news agency that the injured included a German, a Frenchman, a Croat and three Ukrainians. The Austrian news agency APA also reported two injured people from Austria.
