According to organizers, three activists from this year’s alternative Nobel Prize winner Mother Nature Cambodia will not be allowed to travel to Stockholm for the awards ceremony. A court recently ruled that the three would not be allowed to travel from Cambodia to Sweden to receive the Right Livelihood Award, according to the Right Livelihood Foundation. The foundation called for a review of the decision.
The Right Livelihood Award is commonly known as the Alternative Nobel Prize. The foundation announced last week that this year’s prize would go to the Cambodian environmental activist group Mother Nature Cambodia, among others. The European aid organization SOS Méditerranée, women’s rights activist Eunice Brookman-Amissah from Ghana and environmental activist Phyllis Omido from Kenya also received prizes this time. The awards will be solemnly presented on November 29 in Stockholm.
According to a spokeswoman for the foundation, the activists are Phoun Keo Raksmey, Thon Ratha and Long Kunthea. According to the Swedish news agency TT, they all received suspended prison sentences for their work to protect Cambodia’s natural resources. They were therefore convicted in the summer of 2021 for incitement to serious crimes. (sda/dpa)
