The death of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin (†62) caused chaos in the mercenary force – what should happen now to the thousands of Wagner fighters?
Now suddenly a new – and well-known – name comes into play: Prigozhin’s son Pavel (25) would inherit his father. Not only financially, but also as successor at the head of the mercenary force.
A document shared in Russian Telegram groups claims to show Yevgeny Prigozhin’s will. In it, notarized on March 2, Pavel Prigozhin is named sole heir of his assets. This includes the assets of the Wagner Group itself. Pavel Prigozhin himself submitted an inheritance application on September 8.
In addition to the Wagner Group, Pawel will inherit the equivalent of about 100 million francs, a three-story house in St. Petersburg, nine stock companies and shares in the hospitality empire, according to the document.
Little is known about Prigozhin himself, there are not many photos of him. But he himself is said to have fought in the Wagner group. Western military experts also believe the son will now be elevated to the top of the group, according to an analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
They assume that Prigozhin is just a puppet for the real puppeteers within the Wagner group. The ISW cites sources close to Wagner who suspect that the young man is under the influence of Mikhail Vatanin, the head of the Wagner security service, during his negotiations.
Or are these rumors related to the appointment of Andrei Troshev? He was received by Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) in the Kremlin last week and will in the future coordinate “the formation of volunteer units” for the war against Ukraine.
As one of the most experienced Wagner commanders, Troshev was a major player in Prigozhin’s mercenary force, but he is said to have warned the Kremlin early on about the Wagner uprising in late June. Two days after Yevgeny Prigozhin called off the uprising just outside Moscow, he threw out his old confidante Troshev.
Now there could be a split in the Wagner group, because it is unlikely that the group around Mikhail Vatanin will agree with the appointment of the ‘traitor’ Troshev. With the son of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the new leadership could now try to get the mercenaries behind them. It is not yet known what Putin thinks about the new staff.
According to the Telegram channel “GreyZone”, Pavel Prigozhin is already negotiating with the Ministry of Defense in Moscow about the return of the Wagner mercenaries to the war against Ukraine. (neo)
